About Us

Everything you need to know about VTRC, and probably some you don't

General Info

Founded in 2007, the Virginia Tech Running Club has since grown to be the largest sports club on campus with over 150 dues-paying members! We welcome all runners, whether you're just trying to stay in shape or trying to set a new PR.

We hold practice every weekday, at the time/place listed on the front page of this site (the time/place will depend on whether you're sprinting or running distance). You can the runs and workouts we'll be doing at each practice in the respective team training plans. All of these runs, workout or not, are completely optional, but we'd love to see you out there running with us!

There are typically offer 4-5 races per semester, with a Cross Country season in the fall and a Track & Field season in the spring. We compete as a part of NIRCA, the National Intercollegiate Running Club Association, and travel to their National meets in both cross country and track. The Nationals meets are open to anyone, no qualification required! You can find out more about NIRCA from their website here.

Racing (as with everything else) is completely optional, but is encouraged because it's a lot of fun!

If you are interested in racing this semester please take a look at the information on paying racing dues on our forms/policies page.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your question isn't answered below or anywhere else on the website, please feel free to reach out to any of our officers listed on our officer page. We'd be happy to help!

What if I am Out of Shape?

We welcome runners of all skill levels, from beginner or to professional (although we don't get a lot of them). Typically at practice, we'll have groups running anything from 3-10 miles, and you're welcome to join any of them!

Is Anything Mandatory?

No! All practices, races, socials, etc, are completely optional, but we'd love to see you there!

Do you have Sprinters?

Yes! We offer a unique training plan designed for sprinting. Sprinters typically compete in the spring semester, during our track season, and meet for conditioning in the fall. If you have any questions about sprinting with the club, please feel free to reach out to either of our sprint captains. You can find their contact information on our officer page.

What about field events?

Also yes! We offer all the traditional events like high jump, long/triple jump, shot put, and discus. If you're interested in competing in those events with the club, you can contact either of our sprint captains as well!

As of now, we do not offer Javelin or Pole Vault for various reasons (cost of equipment, lack of practice space, cost of equipment, etc). However, we do allow our members to compete in these events if they've had prior experience competing in them and are able to provide (or procure) their own equipment.

How Much are Dues?

If you just want to show up and run with us, dues are $20. If you want to race during the semester, dues are $100. Racing dues include hotel costs for meets like Nationals and allow you to race in any of the meets we go to during the semester. Both prices include a semester shirt.

If you're not sure whether or not you want to join yet, don't worry! Dues aren't "due" until the 2nd-3rd week of official practices - plenty of time to figure out if running club is right for you!
